What is a critical illness cover?

Critical illness cover provides financial protection if you're diagnosed with a serious illness such as cancer, heart attack, or stroke. While these are the main conditions covered, there can be many others listed in the policy, sometimes over 50. Each condition has specific criteria for a successful claim, meaning some less severe illnesses might not qualify as 'critical'.

The purpose of critical illness cover is to ease financial burdens during a health crisis. The payout can be used for daily expenses, private medical treatments, home modifications for medical needs, or to support family members taking time off work to care for you.

It's important to note that critical illness insurance doesn't cover every illness, nor does it relate to your ability to work. For coverage related to your ability to work, consider income protection insurance.

Additionally, many policies include children's cover, providing a lump sum if your child is diagnosed with a serious illness to assist with treatment or support the family during such challenging times.

Coverage varies significantly between insurance providers, so it's crucial to consider your needs and not simply opt for the cheapest option. Seek advice from an advisor to find the most suitable cover for your situation.

Who is it for?

You should think about getting critical illness cover if:
  • You lack other forms of financial support in case you become seriously ill, like income protection.
  • You have outstanding debts such as a mortgage that would need to be paid off even if you were seriously ill.
  • You have dependents who rely on your income or unpaid contributions, such as caregiving or household responsibilities.
  • You have children who depend on you and you want financial assistance in case they become seriously ill.

Get expert advice

At Mortgage Mantra, our team of expert advisers carefully assess your personal and financial details to determine your borrowing capacity. They're dedicated to addressing all your inquiries, guiding you through various mortgage options, and assisting you in identifying the most suitable one for your requirements.

Find a property

Navigating the journey to find your dream property can be challenging, and determining an appropriate offer can be even more so. While our advisers are unable to negotiate directly with the estate agent on your behalf, they can offer valuable advice and tips on making an offer. Additionally, your adviser can furnish the estate agent with an Agreement In Principle if needed as proof of your mortgage eligibility.

Make an application

Once the estate agent confirms your offer has been accepted, it is time to apply for your new mortgage. Your adviser will compare all the mortgage products available to you and will recommend the one which is most suitable for your circumstances. They will provide you with a written illustration confirming all the key facts about the recommended product and will carefully talk this through with you.
